Drug testing is essential to support a wide range of offender management activities, from mandatory drug screening to the assessment of offenders on arrival for addiction support and prescribing services, as well as voluntary testing that underpins schemes for drug-free wings.
Thanks to its portability and non-invasive approach, Intelligent Fingerprinting’s Drug Screening System provides a hygienic and convenient point-of-care drug test that can be easily implemented to support random or unannounced testing.
Access to a portable drug screening system that delivers results in 10 minutes could help with more accurate assessment of offenders' treatment needs on arrival at prison.
Fingerprint sample collection is hygienic and non-invasive, with none of the biohazards associated with handling urine or oral fluid samples, so testing can take place any time, anywhere with no need for specially prepared sample collection areas or clinical waste disposal.
Simplified screening with the portable Intelligent Fingerprinting Drug Screening System helps prison staff to ensure that only abstainers are able to access drug-free wings and their associated privileges.
Portable, fingerprint-based screening makes spontaneous drug testing a reality, helping to address problems associated with diverted medication by detecting those involved and creating an effective deterrent against drug diversion.
The UK Government’s Prison Safety and Reform White Paper (November 2016) includes recommendations to address drug misuse within prisons, with a particular focus on supporting governors to enable drug testing on entry and exit while also increasing the frequency of drug testing. New drug screening methods – such as Intelligent Fingerprinting’s revolutionary drug screening system – could be beneficial in supporting the Government’s proposed reforms, particularly if they reduce the amount of time prison staff have to spend in sample preparation and collection.
In the UK, we are working with Her Majesty’s Prison & Probation Service to trial fingerprint drug screening within probation services.
To handle the drug testing process effectively, prison services require access to rapid point-of-care drug screening tests that can be deployed at short notice to provide drug use intelligence. The Intelligent Fingerprinting Drug Screening System’s portability, non-invasive testing approach and its ability to deliver rapid, reliable results make it an ideal solution for drug testing within prisons.

How suitable is your drug testing system for use during the pandemic?
Our fingerprint-based system offers a safe, simple approach to drug testing that’s quick, hygienic and enables social distancing during use.
Face coverings can remain in place throughout testing and there’s no need for close contact or handling of biohazardous body fluids such as saliva or urine samples. Fully portable, our system eliminates the need to call in external drug testers, helping you to lower infection risk and stay in control of costs by bringing testing in-house.

Which drugs does it detect?
We currently offer two versions of our fingerprint drug test cartridge and each of these screens for multiple drug groups simultaneously:
The DSR-Plus portable reader provides a presumptive positive or negative screening result for each drug group in the test.
How much does it cost?
To ensure you receive accurate pricing information and expert advice, we need to know a little about your drug testing requirements. We will then provide costings specifically tailored to your organisation’s needs. Please contact us for a no-obligation quote.
How quick is the test?
Collection of the fingerprint samples onto the Drug Screening Cartridge takes less than a minute. Analysis of the Cartridge using the DSR-Plus portable reader takes only a few minutes.
How easy is it to use?
Fingerprint-based drug screening is quick, hygienic and simple. Fingerprint sample collection takes seconds and is non-invasive and dignified.
The portable DSR-Plus – which is used to read the Drug Screening Cartridge – is operated via a touchscreen and features simple visual prompts. On-screen results are available in minutes and can be printed via the label printer accessory. Customer training is available on request.
How reliable is fingerprint drug screening?
The accuracy of Intelligent Fingerprinting drug screening tests is comparable to other point-of-care drug screening tests such as those using urine and oral fluid samples. Our UKAS-accredited drug screening cartridges provide an initial screening result. This means that when the DSR-Plus reader indicates a positive result, it is known as a ‘presumptive positive’. For an unequivocal test result, further fingerprint samples are collected for a fingerprint-based laboratory test, ‘Confirmatory Analysis’, to confirm the test results.
What does a positive screening result mean?
The Intelligent Fingerprinting Drug Screening Cartridge and DSR-Plus provide a presumptive result only. This means that when the DSR-Plus provides a positive screening result, it cannot be automatically assumed that the person tested has taken the drug(s) indicated. In circumstances where a positive screening result is obtained and an evidential result is required, the customer will need to verify the result using our fingerprint-based laboratory Confirmatory Analysis service.
Do you offer a confirmation service?
Yes, via our accredited partner laboratories using our Fingerprint Collection Kit For Laboratory Analysis. Please contact us for more details.
Do you supply alcohol tests?
Yes, we supply Home Office Approved alcohol breath intoximeters.

How does the Intelligent Fingerprinting Drug Screening System work?
Our fingerprint drug test works by detecting target drugs and drug metabolites contained within the tiny traces of sweat in fingerprints. Drug metabolites are substances produced by the body when it processes (metabolises) drugs.
It takes less than a minute to collect the fingerprint sweat sample onto a small, tamper-evident cartridge. The cartridge is then analysed by the portable DSR-Plus reader to provide a screening result for each drug group in the test in minutes.
